The quest for gaining the supreme position in the smart phone category has taken a new route with Nokia introducing their new windows smart phone models into the market. With Sony and Samsung dominating the market for quite sometime it was always going to be Nokia to come up with some fresh ideas if they want to hold their feet on the market yet again. And they came back ever so strong with the inclusion of some classy models. But Samsung had already planned their next move to counter this leap from Nokia with the releasing of their much awaited smart phone Samsung Galaxy S4. After the success of Samsung Galaxy S3 in the market the users were anticipating the release of new S4. This is the comparison of the giants in the smart phone industry today, Samsung Galaxy S4 VS Nokia Lumia 920.Both phone is priced around 30000 INR. And Samsung S4 being the costlier of two.
Samsung has an reputation for always bringing a user friendly design to the users, here also they didn’t disappointed us, with curvy designs and thin size the phone compliments the hand well. The screen has a size of 5″ and weighs around 130gm. The body is made up of poly carbonated element which looks good but the thin size has its problem. Recent drop tests showed cracking of display when dropped from shoulder height. In other hand Lumia 920 has a tough look with thick size of 4.5″ screen and sharp edges which is not that much easy to hold in hand. Compared to the 130 gm of S4, Lumia 920 weighs whooping 185 gm which is an nightmare for guys who texts a lot. But the thick nature gives 920 an advantage of being strong, test proves that there is no major damage when dropped from similar height as that of s4. Both the phones has volume rocker, lock button and dedicated camera switch on the side of the phone. With user friendly design and weightless nature the S4 will be apt for users with frequent use. Whereas 920 will give your phone an extra life if it slips from your hand, so its best for hardcore users.
Samsung Galaxy S4 comes with a super amoled touchscreen with 16M colors whereas the 920 has a IPS capacitive touch screen. Due to the high screen size of s4 it has a resolution of 1080 x 1920 with a pixel density of 441 ppi whereas 920 has a resolution of 768 x 1280 with a 331 ppi. S4 uses third generation of protective corning gorilla glass as that of 920 it uses the second generation of the same gorilla glass. But 920 comes out good in this category with pure motion HD+ interface and a eye popping clear black display which is so eye pleasant in day and night. The touch-wiz interface is not bad for S4 but nothing compared to pure motion HD+ interface. So 920 takes the upper hand in this category.
Both the smartphones has an 3.5 mm jack for music purposes but 920 has an Dolby headphone enhancements which is crystal clear when made to use. 920 has a clear cut advantage in the sound section with a sharp and clear sound coming out from the speakers which is situated at the bottom of the phone whereas S4 is lagging in sound category.
One of the major drawbacks of 920 is the lack of SD card slot, 920 comes with 32 GB internal memory whereas the S4 has SD slot as well as 3 variants in internal memory of 16/32/64 GB. So for a guy with lots of media S4 will be the best to choose because of the huge amount of storage it provide whereas 920 disappoints here with minimal storage capacity and lack of memory card slots.
S4 works with a Android 4.2.2 jelly bean whereas 920 has the latest windows phone 8(upgradable to WP8 amber). S4 has a Exynos 5 Octa 5410 chip-set and in the other hand 920 has a common Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon chip-set which is seen in most of the high end smart phones. S4 has multiple quad core processor which include a 1.6 GHz cortex A-15 and 1.2 Cortex A-7 which gives that boost to the phone, the processor is one of the best in the market and the phone hardly lags. Multitasking lovers will love this phone because of the speed and response of the phone. In the other hand 920 has a Dual-core 1.5 GHz Krait processor which is good but it cant be compared with the performance given by S4. 920 has a Adreno 225 GPU unit which is almost common with Lumia series, most of the games can be played without lag and works pretty well with the phone. S4 has a more powerful GPU named PowerVR SGX 544MP3 which is designed for high end performance and hardcore gaming. Gaming will be a pleasure for those gamers who loves to spend hours in front of the phone. S4 will give you premium performance but 920 is not bad either the 920 specs compliment each other pretty well but S4 steals the show in performance department.
S4 being the performer comparing the two has a 2600mAh which can be used for a day for an average user whereas 920 has a 2000mAh battery which can be used a day if used limited. Other than that the S4 has a removable back panel and hence the battery can be removed but 920 has non removable back panel and hence is little squishy. 920 has a wireless recharging option which is good because of its squishiness. S4 can be charged without wire but an extra panel will be needed. Without any doubt S4 has the better backup compared to 920 because of its good battery.
920 has a 8MP camera compared to the 13MP camera given by S4 but 920 has features like the optical image stabilization which is so good when compared to the S4 which has 13MP. The picture coming from 920 looks smooth and looks better in low light. Both the phones has led flash light. Videos from 920 also stand out when compared with S4. S4 comes with a lot of modes compared to 920 but lacks due to the clarity and stability given by the 920. If you are more of a photo taker 920 will be more efficient due to lots of fascinating features.
From the above summary it is clear that Samsung Galaxy S4 stands out top in many of the important features like performance, Display, Battery and all. Since S4 is a smart phone released on 2013 compared to the 920 released on 2012 its little harsh to say that 920 disappoints when compared to S4 but with the android platform and lots of important apps to explore S4 is the clear winner. The features like offline mapping and optical image stabilization will always be a positive of the Nokia franchise. With Nokia Lumia 1020 on its way to the market we might see a good competition between these brands for the pole position.
